How to record each camera separately while live streaming

Isolated recording is what turns a live event into editable material. Without it, every bad cut is permanent.

You streamed the event, you have the recording, and there is a shot you wish you had held two seconds longer. There is nothing you can do, because what you recorded is the mix, not the cameras.

What isolated recording is

Alongside the programme mix, every camera writes its own continuous file. Camera one records for the whole event regardless of when it was on air. So does camera two, and three.

Afterwards you have the switched version and every angle in full. The live cut becomes a rough cut you can improve rather than a decision you are stuck with.

Why it matters more than people expect

  • A missed cut can be fixed afterwards.
  • A camera that was out of focus for a minute can be replaced with another angle.
  • A highlight clip can be cut from the best angle rather than the one that happened to be live.
  • A speaker who was framed badly can be re-framed from a wider camera.

The disk question

More files means more disk. A rough guide: budget around a gigabyte per camera per ten minutes at 1080p, and more if you record at higher bitrates.

Use an SSD, not a spinning drive, and not the same drive the operating system is on. Writing several video streams at once is the one part of this that genuinely stresses a machine.

Check free space before every event. Running out of disk mid-recording is a worse failure than never recording at all, because you lose confidence in the file you do have.

Audio too

The same principle applies to sound, and it matters just as much. If every microphone is recorded to its own track, a speaker who was too quiet can be fixed afterwards without the band being fixed with them.

How it works in Skynat Live

Turn on isolated recording in the recording settings. Up to twelve cameras write their own files and up to thirty-two microphones write their own tracks, alongside the programme.

The recordings are written in crash-safe segments that stay playable even if the machine fails, and the trim tool joins them into one clean file afterwards. You can also mark clips while the event is running, which are exported ready to post.
